Are Morning Routines Actually Useful
With all the hype around morning routines and how billionaires all have one, you’re asking yourself: do these routines actually work, or are they just a byproduct of having the success gene.
The simple answer is: YES
The complex answer is:
Morning routines are a productivity hack that allows you to optimize your time throughout the day. However, you could follow a guaranteed to work morning routine and still end up unsuccessful. Allow me to explain
Imagine being able to double your comprehension skills while reading a book or get fitter at twice the speed, but you never start reading nor hit the gym. Zero multiplied by two is still zero, and you make zero progress.
A morning routine essentially doubles your productivity for the day (if done correctly that is), but what you do throughout the day determines if you are successful in what you seek to achieve.
How Does a Morning Routine Boost Productivity
You might be wondering, how does simply having a morning routine double one’s productivity of the day. Is it magic? What is this secret pill that has been overlooked by so many?
To explain the concept in simple terms: having a morning routine primes your mind for the day to come and prepares you for challenges ahead.
Here’s a comparison of two mornings by the same person (let’s call him James).
Morning 1: James wakes up precisely at 7:30 to catch the 7:45 subway to work. He skips his skincare routine and forgets to brush his teeth. James hurriedly puts on his suit and runs to the subway station. He’s sweating, his hair is messy, his breathe stinks, and his suit looks off. Basically his whole appearance isn’t the best it can be, and he didn’t have time to eat breakfast.
Morning 2: James wakes up at 7:15, just 15 minutes before he usually does. With this extra time, he properly grooms himself, makes himself two sunny side up eggs(simply crack two eggs and put it there, you don’t even have to flip it!) while brewing a nice cup of coffee and reading the morning news. He properly dresses himself while eating his breakfast, makes his bed, and slowly walks to the subway station.
With Morning 1, James looks and therefore feels like shit. He felt extremely rushed in the morning and didn’t get any food in the system, thereby feeling unenergetic and unmotivated. His perception of his own ability to complete tasks is also affected, as looking good gives oneself confidence while looking messy takes away self-confidence.
With Morning 2, James looks sharp and feels energized with his breakfast and coffee(fun fact: breakfast means breaking the fasting from the previous night). James already feels accomplished because he’s made his bed, a remarkably simple yet fundamentally important task, and with this momentum going forwards, he’s highly motivated to perform whatever tasks lay ahead.
It’s pretty evident that by simply waking up 15 minutes earlier, James was able to start the day highly energized, giving him a boost for the day that would help him focus on his work and maximize his time. The method works, so use it.
